I love movies. I mean, who doesn’t? But what is it about certain movies that make them so great? What is it about others that makes them so off-putting? Well, after a lot of careful consideration and plenty of movie watching, I have narrowed down my top 10 favorite moments from Brownsville movies. Number Ten: The Dance Scene in Billy Elliot.
For me, this scene captures the excitement and freedom of dancing better than any other moment in cinema history. For those of you who don’t know, Billy Elliot is a film about a boy who wants to break free from his fatherly role in his life and become a ballet dancer. Not only does this scene highlight the dance that Billy has been practicing for months, but it also conveys the idea of freedom. The dancing starts off with a very simple routine, but as things become more complex, so does the movement. And by the time you’ve reached number five, you can’t help but be enthralled by the movement that’s taking place on screen.
Number Nine: The first 10 minutes of Blazing Saddles .
When I think of Saddles , this scene pops into my head often. As the camera pans across the landscape, you are given a small taste of the type of movie you’re about to watch. It’s like a popcorn version of what you’re going to see. And then, out pops this guy:
Number Eight: The first appearance of Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon .
I can’t really explain why I love this scene so much, but I think it has something to do with watching someone kick so much ass. This scene illustrates Brucie’s amazing mastery of his martial arts skills and goes from zero to awesome in half a second flat. And that split second where he does both hands behind his back and says “Some say I am a god,” is just too cool for words.
Number Seven: The scene where they take the sword out of Wesley’s hand in Krull .
I’ll be honest, this film is one of my favorites. This is a movie that I began watching with no expectations, but ended up liking enough to seek out a copy and watch it again and again. As the Hero of the Universe, Prince Colwyn must defeat an evil warlord to save his world. After a long and brutal fight, he finds himself cornered with no other options but death. Then things get crazy…
Number Six: The car chase in Bullitt .
This movie is great. Start to finish, this film has action. I mean, it’s not just car chases we’re talking about here. It’s an opening car chase, a foot chase, another car chase, a boat chase and then the amazing on-foot showdown between Steve McQueen and the bad guy. This scene is amazing because everything comes together so perfectly. The lights at night, the rain drops on McQueen’s windshield, the dramatic music… Some of the best moments I’ve seen in my favorite type of film.
Number Five: The first fight scene in the original Rocky .
This is the scene that got me hooked on Rocky . I love the whole “enough is enough” attitude, even though I don’t know why. I love how Rocky physically overcomes his opponent and how easily he’s able to take him down. And then there’s all of that music… I also can’t help but appreciate the fact that this happened in a movie and it actually felt real. I mean, come on… People really don’t just have boxing matches with each other, do they?
Number Four: The car chase for our freedom in Glory .
Everyone knows about this film. It’s a Civil War movie starring Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington. It’s a powerful film that throws us into the middle of a war and shows us the difficult choices and sacrifices that were made. This scene is one that I often think about because it shows bravery and human endurance at its finest.
Number Three: The food fight scene in Animal House .
This is a movie that I grew up with. It’s one of those films that people always talk about because it has become a part of our culture. I’ve seen this movie so many times that I don’t always remember the individual scenes. But if I had to choose one, it would definitely be this one.
Number Two: The opening scene of The Dark Knight .
This film has so much energy and style that you can’t help but be drawn into it. I think my favorite part of this is the fact that Batman is not just some hero who appears from out of nowhere. He’s someone who spends his nights on rooftops, looking out into the city and contemplating the darkness he will face tomorrow. You can just feel how alone he is and also how prepared he is to face whatever may come his way.
Number One: The final fight scene between Neo and Agent Smith in The Matrix .
This was the first film I went to see by myself. I think it was on opening night and I walked into that theater at 8pm with my ticket and a snack and sat down. When the movie started, I felt like a young kid on Christmas morning. It felt like nothing else in the world existed except for me and this screen. The moment when Neo faces off against Agent Smith for the last time is something that will stick with me forever. Not just because of how awesome it is, but because it was one of my first experiences with what cinema can do to people. This scene captures everything that makes a great movie…
