The 2014 Winter Olympics were held in Sochi , Russia, while the 2010 Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, Canada. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia. The only cities since 1924 to host both a summer and winter games are Innsbruck (Austria), Lake Placid (United States) and St. Moritz (Switzerland).

The first summer Olympic Games took place in Athens (Greece) in 1896 .  The first winner of the Olympic marathon race was Spyridon Louis from Greece .

The first Winter Olympic Games took place in Chamonix (France) in 1924.  The first winner of the Olympic Alpine Skiing event was Charles Jewtraw from the USA. 

8. Which countries have hosted the Summer Olympics?

Between 1894 and 2012, a total of 43 games have been hosted by 25 different cities in 19 countries. Los Angeles, United States was the Host city for the 1932 Olympics. London will be hosting the 2012 summer Olympics which is taking place for the third time in London . Beijing was last summer host of 2008 Beijing Olympics which is taking place for the second time in China .

Between 1952 and 2014, a total of 28 games have been hosted by 12 different cities in 4 countries. Sion (Switzerland), Innsbruck (Austria), Lake Placid (USA) and Sochi (Russia) are the host cities for the 2014 winter olympics.

10. Why are Olympic Games so called “The Festival of Peace”?

The name of the festival originated in ancient Greece, where it was known as Olympionia, which roughly translates to “zeal for the honor of our great gods.
